What is a Special Enrollment Period?
A Special Enrollment Period is a time outside annual Open Enrollment when an eligible person can enroll in or change Marketplace coverage. Eligibility depends on the event, timing, prior coverage, location, and other circumstances.
Events that may qualify
Examples include losing qualifying health coverage, marriage, birth or adoption, and certain permanent moves. Other situations may also qualify. An event alone does not guarantee eligibility; the Marketplace makes the determination.
Documentation and deadlines
The Marketplace may request evidence such as a coverage termination notice, marriage record, birth or adoption record, or proof of a qualifying move. Requested documents are generally time-sensitive, and failing to submit acceptable proof can affect enrollment.
Do not wait until the end
Begin promptly, save confirmation numbers and notices, and respond to document requests. Review the coverage effective date before cancelling other coverage or scheduling care.
