What a metal level tells you

ACA Marketplace plans are grouped into Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum categories. The category reflects the overall share of covered costs a plan is designed to pay across a standard population. It does not rank physicians, hospitals, customer service, or medical quality.

How the categories generally differ

  • Bronze: commonly has lower premiums and higher costs when care is used.
  • Silver: sits between Bronze and Gold and is the only category that can include cost-sharing reductions for eligible consumers.
  • Gold: commonly has higher premiums and lower costs when receiving covered care.
  • Platinum: generally has the highest premiums and the plan pays a larger share of covered costs; availability varies.

Why Silver deserves special attention

Premium tax credits may be applied to Marketplace plans in different metal categories, but cost-sharing reductions are available only through eligible Silver plans. Those reductions can lower deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and the out-of-pocket maximum.

Compare more than the color

Review the premium, deductible, service copays, coinsurance, out-of-pocket maximum, network, formulary, and referral rules together. Someone expecting frequent care may evaluate the tradeoffs differently from someone mainly seeking protection from large unexpected costs.

The lowest monthly premium is not automatically the lowest total-cost option for the year.
